Received: 27 April 2013 Accepted: 6 August 2013 Abstract Background and Aim: Discoloration is among the most common problems of composite restorations. Color change over time compromises the main advantage of composite resins namely their high esthetics. In such cases, the restoration needs to be replaced. .The aim of this in-vitro study was to evaluate the effect of accelerated artificial aging (AAA) on the color stability of three composite resins (Filtek Z250, Filtek Z250XT, and Filtek Supreme). Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 7 composite specimens with equal dimensions were fabricated of each composite resin. The initial color of specimens was measured using a spectroradiometer according to the CIE Lab system. The specimens were then submitted to AAA for 384h and underwent color assessment again. Before and after aging, the surface roughness of one specimen from each group was determined by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The obtained color parameters were analyzed by oneway ANOVA and Tukey’s test. Results: The color change of Filtek Z250 was significantly lower than that of Filtek Z250XT and Filtek Supreme (P≤0.05). No statistically significant differences were found between Z250XT and Supreme in this respect (P>0.05). Conclusion: All composite resins showed color change above the clinically acceptable threshold . Z250 microhybrid composite was more color stable than nanocomposites (Z250XT and Supreme). AAA increased the surface roughness in all groups but it was within the clinically acceptable range.

Influence of Light-Curing Units on Color Stability of Composite Resins After Aging

Background and Aim: The use of composite restorations has increased in recent years. One of the most important problems with composite restorations is the loss of consistency between the composite and tooth color, which in most cases requires replacement. Materials and Methods: In this study, the color stability of 40 disc-shaped specimens (10 mm in diameter and 2 mm in height) from two types ...

Effect of Accelerated Aging on the Color Stability of Light-cured Res-in Cement and Flowable Composite Through Porcelain Laminate Veneer

Background and Aim: Changing the color of resin luting cements could affect the aesthetic appearance of thin porcelain veneer. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of artificially accelerated aging on color stability of light-cured resin cement and flowable composite as a luting agent through the porcelain veneer. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was carried ...

Color stability of composites subjected to accelerated aging after curing using either a halogen or a light emitting diode source.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the color stability of three composite resins of two different shades (A3 and C3) cured with either a quartz tungsten halogen (QTH) or a light emitting diode (LED) source. Forty specimens (20 x 2 mm) were prepared for each composite (Tetric Ceram, Heliomolar and Esthet-X), being 20 for each shade. In each group, 10 specimens were light-cured ...

Effects of fibers on the color change and stability of resin composites after accelerated aging.

Composite resins were reinforced with glass and polyethylene fibers in this study, and the effect of fiber reinforcement on the color change of composite resins was investigated. After accelerated aging, the effect of fiber reinforcement on the color stability of composite resins was also examined. There were three experimental groups (n=12 disks per group): non-fiber-reinforced composite (non-...

Color Stability of Restorative Resins

The color stability of seven commercial composite resins, an unfilled resin, and three glazes was studied under conditions of accelerated aging by reflection spectrophotometry and visually with Munsell color tabs. After aging for 900 hours, most of the resins had lower values of luminous reflectance and excitation purity and higher values of dominant wavelength and contrast ratio compared to va...
